DIY Vitamin C Serum/Moisturizer

Skincare products containing Vitamin C are all the rage, but they are extremely pricey! You can make your own serum or moisturizer cheaply at home, and it will be just as effective. You only need a few ingredients and you can get most of them at Walmart/Target, health stores, or on eBay! I got all my ingredients for under $4 each!

One reason why it's not worth it to purchase Vitamin C products is because they are rendered ineffective after a period of time. L-ascorbic acid, or Vitamin C reacts to sunlight and heat, so after a while of using the product, it just gets oxidized and does not work well anymore. That's why we will be making our serum/moisturizer in small batches! It will last a few days and then  you can make more.

What's so great about Vitamin C anyway? It protects skin cells from UV radiation, improves skin texture, stimulates collagen production, improves appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, brightens skin, and fades dark spots!

Now that you've heard some of the wonderful benefits Vitamin C provides, let's get started.

You will need:
  • L-ascorbic acid (Vitamin C)
  • Distilled water or floral water (rose water, orange blossom water, etc.)
  • Vegetable glycerin
  • Amber or dark blue serum bottle (or a dark opaque container if you don't have one)
  • Optional: Additional additives such as licorice extract, aloe vera gel, Vitamin E, etc.

What to do:
I don't have exact measurements for the ingredients because you can estimate the amounts. For people with sensitive skin, I would start with smaller amounts of Vitamin C powder and gradually increase if your skin can handle it.

In a small bowl, add a pinch of Vitamin C powder (about 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon). Then add about a teaspoon of water (I used rose water) to dissolve the powder. Once it is thoroughly mixed, add a dollop of glycerin to make the liquid thicker. Adjust the amount of glycerin you use depending on your skin type. Use less if you have oily skin. Then, add any other extra additives if you wish!

Optional part:
I also added some aloe vera gel. It reduces redness and inflammation and is quite soothing, especially after you've been out in the sun for a while! Then I also added some Vitamin E from a small gel capsule. The liquid inside is quite sticky so if you decide to use it, use only 1-2 capsules. You could also use Vitamin E oil instead.

Pour the serum into a bottle. It's best to recycle an old serum bottle because the dark colored glass prevents it from oxidizing too quickly. If you don't have a serum bottle, you can make do with a dark opaque container. If you see it turning yellow to brown, that means its oxidized and is losing its potency. You want to make small amounts that will last you about a week so it will always be fresh.

This one is quite easy. Put a glob of your daily moisturizer on your hand and simply add a pinch of Vitamin C powder to it. Mix well and apply to your face! You could also make a small batch if you have a small pot to keep your moisturizer in. Just make sure you use it all within a few days.

How to use the serum:
  • Before applying it to your face, test a small patch of your skin to make sure you're not allergic or sensitive to it!
  • Shake bottle before use (especially if you added some oils to it)
  • Add a small amount to your hand and pat on face
After the serum was absorbed into the skin and dried, it left a glowy sheen to my face! I also noticed that my dark acne spots were getting lighter and less red. My face felt really soft and smooth too. I can't wait to see more improvements after using it for a while.
