Summer Staples

When I go shopping for summer clothes, I sometimes lose sight of what I'm shopping for due to the overwhelming amounts of trendy clothing that I am tempted to buy. Often times, these trends don't last forever and I find my compulsive buys stuck in the closet after the season ends.

I've learned the hard way that it's really important to buy clothes you can wear again year after year. It's okay to have some trendy pieces, but you don't want your entire wardrobe to be comprised by it, otherwise you'll be spending a lot of money every season shopping for the latest trends.

I've compiled together my favorite summer staples that work time and time again. If you're from Southern California like I am, you could even wear these things year round. I hope this guide helps you with your summer shopping!

In the summer, I wear skirts more than anything else. My favorite are circle skirts, which are very flattering and cute. I also like maxi skirts, which has an elongating effect and makes me look taller. If you like skirts as much as I do, I suggest buying one or two plain colored skirts, one floral skirt, and one patterned skirt. Having one or two maxi skirts are also a great addition to your wardrobe. I personally like bright colored maxi skirts in colors like coral, turquoise, and mint. Black is also a must. Forever 21 sells skirts for cheap and the quality is decent. If gently worn, these should last years.

I don't wear shorts quite as often as skirts, but I still like to keep a few options. I have basics like black, white, and denim. I also have a few pairs of high waisted shorts that are embellished with studs.

Anything goes for tops. There's just so many different styles, so pick what you like. I like wearing loose tanks and tees. I also have one or two bustiers and crop tops. I like choosing light, summery colors.

Outerwear is great for when it gets chilly at night or for layering. One of my favorite looks is wearing an oversized cardigan over a simple top and skirt/shorts. It's a good idea to have a few cardis in neutral colors. I also like to have a cropped denim jacket which looks really nice over a long sundress. White, khaki, or a faded blue are my favorites for denim jackets.

Sandals are my go-to shoes for the summer. Some people also like to wear ballet flats, Converse, Vans, etc., but due to the heat, I find sandals most comfortable. They're also the most convenient to take on and off. I generally have four to five pairs at a time. I like to have a pair of brown, black, white, and metallic colored sandals. These colors are really easy to match with your outfits. I think out of all my sandals, I wear the gold ones the most. I also like to have white wedges to pair with sundresses. I don't wear wedges too often, but I think they add a pretty and feminine touch to outfits.

My favorites places to buy sandals are Macy's and Marshalls. They always have really good deals and their sandals are good quality, so they last over a year. Sandals there generally cost around $15-$30. Places such as H&M and Forever 21 also carry a wide selection, but their sandals are poorly made. Although they are really cheap, they fall apart after a season of wear, so I prefer buying slightly more expensive ones if that means they will last much longer.
I hope this guide will help you build a long lasting wardrobe. If you buy staples that you can wear year after year, you will save a lot of money in the long run. Have fun shopping!
