How to Become Yelp Elite

So a cool thing happened the other day...I got an email from Yelp saying I had been invited to join Yelp Elite. I had started Yelping in April of this year, so I was pretty psyched that I got the invitation in just three months. Mind you, it wasn't easy! I definitely had to be quite active on the app/website during those three months.

Here's a quick overview on what I did to earn that badge.

Write Reviews
There's no set formula for Elite. The requirements aren't rigid, so it really depends on the Yelper's contributions. My Community Manager (CM) says that she sees many people gain Elite status around 40 reviews. As long as they are informative, unbiased, and genuinely useful, I think you should be set.

Make Lists
I haven't found out how to create lists via mobile app, but I usually make lists through the Yelp website. Your lists can be whatever topic you choose. For example, I've created lists for favorite spots to eat in different areas, such as OC Eats and LA Eats.

Be Active in the Community
Yelp is all about helping other people out with your real insights. So interacting with others is pretty much essential. You can do this by giving other people's reviews a vote for Useful, Funny, and Cool. You can also send them compliments. Lastly, you can check out their forums, called Talk, and chat with others.

That's basically what I did to get Yelp Elite!

One more thing that I did before joining Elite was attend a Yelp event. I wouldn't say it necessarily helped me in getting Elite status, but it was just fun to attend and see what they're like. I also got to meet my region's CM there which was cool!

You can easily check out the calendar to see what events are coming to your area. Not every event is exclusive to Yelp Elite members! There are OYEs (Official Yelp Events), UYEs (Unofficial Yelp Events), and CMYEs (Community Manager Yelp Events) that any one can attend.

The event I went to was a CMYE hosted Night Market, with loads of local artisans and live entertainment. The items were a little pricey for me, so I just looked around. If I had a lot of money to spend, I definitely would have bought some candles, soaps, and jewelry though! The only thing I ended up buying was am $8 cheese spread HAHAHA.

This event had special perks for Yelp members (nope you don't even have to be Elite, you just have to be a member of Yelp). Firstly, there was an admission fee of $5, but Yelpers got VIP entrance for free. There was also a large bag filled with goodies that came from the vendors at the night market. Yelpers were given a chance to randomly draw from the bag and keep whatever item they got. My sister and I ended up getting a cosmetics pouch and a face moisturizer. I saw these items at their individual stands and the total value of the items were about $40. Pretty cool!

So I'm pretty excited to see what perks I can get! Besides having a cool badge on my profile, I can also now attend events with free food and gifts. Who doesn't love free? It'll also be cool to meet some new people. I already met some nice locals when I attended the night market so I can't wait to see who else I'll meet in the future!
