Skincare Essentials

I vehemently believe that skincare should come before cosmetics. Yes, makeup is amazing, but wouldn't it be even more amazing if you didn't need to cover up blemishes in the first place? That's why I strongly advise younger girls (like my little sister) to take care of their skin starting at an early age. Sure, they might not look like they need it, and I'm certainly not suggesting them to go out and buy anti-aging products or anything like that, but developing small habits like moisturizing and using sunscreen will definitely benefit them in the long run.

A lot of people probably don't think it makes much of a difference, but trust me it does!! When I was 16 years old, I had a friend my age who had the skin of a mid 20's or even early 30's person, due to excessive sun exposure and not moisturizing. My friend already had pretty noticeable long wrinkles beneath the eyes. Their skin was also not the softest – it had gotten rough due to dryness.

My Skin History
The thing I get complimented the most on nowadays is my skin. I didn't always have clear skin though. Luckily, my bad skin only lasted about two years. It was around age 16-17 when I had pretty bad skin. I didn't really get the big red pimples, but I got tiny whiteheads all over my forehead. It was awful and I was so self-conscious about it. I tried many harsh treatments (like Proactiv) to get rid of it, but it never helped. It probably made it even worse. Eventually, I gave up on the treatments and just washed my face and moisturized daily. Miraculously, doing that alone made all the whiteheads start to disappear until I had none left. Ever since then, whenever I got the occasional pimple, I would skip the harsh chemicals and just use a gentle cleanser and moisturizer and it worked like a charm!

Skincare Tips
So over time I learned a couple things that worked for me, and I'll share it with you too in hopes that it will be good advice.
  • Frequently clean surfaces that come into contact with your face (phones, pillowcases, etc.).
  • Moisturize daily. Even if you have oily skin, you may think you don't need to, but you can use gel type moisturizers instead. I like to use Clinque's Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel. Oily skin may actually be feeling dry and overcompensating for it by producing more oils, which can lead to breakouts. Try using some moisturizer to see if it actually helps you cut back on the oil buildup.
  • If possible, don't use harsh skin treatments for acne (unless your dermatologist prescribed it, then of course you should listen to your doctor and not me lol). Instead, just keep it simple like a gentle cleanser (my favorite is Philosophy's Purity cleanser) and moisturizer.
  • Use SPF protection. I use it on a daily basis, whether I plan on being outside for 5 minutes or 5 hours. I like to use moisturizers with SPF in it (right now I've been using one from Shiseido). If I know I will be staying outdoors for extended periods of time, I will also put sunscreen on my face with a higher SPF. This will protect your skin and prevent premature wrinkles!
  • Drink plenty of water. It will help you flush out toxins and keep your skin clear.
  • Eat lots of fruits and vegetables, go light on foods such as meats and dairy.

Favorite Skincare Products

Shiseido White Lucent Brightening Moisturizing Emulsion Broad Spectrum SPF 18I use this every morning as a base before applying moisturizer. I like to have a little SPF protection. Even though it contains SPF, it still feels so light and non-greasy.

Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing GelThis has been a staple in my skincare regimen for years. I love how this gel leaves my skin feeling refreshed and moisturized without being oily. This moisturizer has never made me break out or anything so I've stuck with it for as long as I can remember.

Bioderma H20 Solution MicellaireSuch a gentle makeup remover! I don't know exactly how it works, but it removes all makeup, even tough mascara. I saturate a cotton pad with it and press it against my eye makeup for a few seconds, and then it all wipes away. I also use this all over my face to remove my BB cream, contour, highlight, etc.

Kose Medicated Sekkisei EmulsionI switch off between this emulsion and the Etude House one (just because I like switching up my products sometimes). This one is supposed to brighten skin and prevent sunspots.

Etude House Moistfull White EmulsionI love pretty much all the skincare products from Etude House. I'm obsessed with Korean skincare! This emulsion in particular leaves my skin feeling so supple and soft. It also keeps skin nice and bright.

Rose Hip Seed Oil I use this when my skin is feeling especially dry. It really treats the dryness and as an added plus, the rose scent is wonderful! Rose hip seed oil contains lots of vitamins and antioxidants to reduce dark spots, retain skin elasticity, and lots more anti-aging benefits.
